What A Stripper Can Teach You About Being Persuasive
I teach my clients social cues and persuasive techniques they can use to become more persuasive during interviews and salary negotiations. Some of these techniques are easy to implement (smile when you’re on the phone), some take practice (eliminating “ums” from your speech) and some you were born with. Let me explain.
Scientists at the University of New Mexico had a question: Are women more persuasive at any particular time in their lives and if so, when? They wanted to know the why and how and they decided that the best place to do this was at a strip club. The research consisted of this: They would track the earnings of the dancers at a particular strip club and see if there were any fluctuations in their earnings and figure out what caused that fluctuation. Any guesses?
Their research shows that women are more persuasive during ovulation. During ovulation, women’s lips get fuller and redder, their cheeks get a little tinge of red, and their body releases a scent that the male brain can subconsciously smell. Not surprising, these are all visual triggers that show that a woman is fertile. Multiple research has confirmed that women are more “attractive” to their mates while ovulating. When women are especially fertile, their partners become more attentive, are more vigilant, and engage in “mate-guarding” behavior to keep other men away. Your body is emitting a signal letting the world know “Hey! If you want to procreate, right now is your best chance!” Of course, men subconsciously notice these triggers and react accordingly. The research points that strippers who were ovulating made 30% more money than those that were not. That’s a significant difference. There is a catch though: if the female was using some sort of birth control, there was no difference in the persuasiveness. The reason for this is that birth control pills tell your body that you are already pregnant and therefore is not able to get “re-pregnant”. Since your body is already pregnant, all the other fertile signals (tinge of red, fuller lips, release of pheromones) do not occur.
Of course, I would never suggest you postpone an interview to coincide with your ovulation period, but it is good to know when Nature is on your side to help you.
